New EU fragrance rules explained: is your favourite about to change?

Every time Brussels updates its cosmetics regulations, the fragrance community braces for the same thing: quiet reformulations that nobody announces and everybody smells.

The latest round expands the list of allergens that must be declared on packaging and tightens limits on a handful of widely used materials. For most wearers the practical effect is small — longer ingredient lists in tiny print.

But for a few icons built on the restricted materials, the choice is stark: reformulate around the limits, or keep the formula and change the concentration. History says reformulation wins, and batch-code detectives will be watching.

Our advice remains boring but true: if you love a specific batch of a specific fragrance, buy a backup. Not five backups. One.
